Bangladesh opener Tanzid Hasan Tamim produced an explosive innings of 83 off 71 balls to give the Tigers a flying start against Afghanistan in their one-off Test at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi on Friday.
Bangladesh reached 134 for one at lunch on the opening day after captain Najmul Hossain Shanto won the toss and elected to bat first. Tanzid’s aggressive approach put the Afghan bowlers under early pressure and laid the foundation for a strong first-innings total.
The left-handed batter struck eight boundaries and four sixes during his entertaining knock, displaying an attacking style that kept Bangladesh’s scoring rate high throughout the opening session.
Tanzid, Shadman Build Strong Opening Partnership
Tanzid and fellow opener Shadman Islam combined for a 124-run opening partnership, giving Bangladesh the perfect start in the important Test encounter.
While Tanzid took the aggressive route, Shadman focused on building his innings patiently at the other end. The partnership helped Bangladesh establish early control and put the Afghan bowling attack on the defensive.
Tanzid looked poised to reach another significant milestone before his innings came to an end at 83. Afghanistan medium-pacer Ismat Alam dismissed the opener, with the wicketkeeper completing the catch behind the stumps.
Despite missing out on a century, Tanzid’s contribution provided Bangladesh with valuable momentum heading into the remainder of the day’s play.
Bangladesh Look to Build a Big First-Innings Total
After Tanzid’s departure, Shadman continued to anchor the innings, remaining unbeaten on 41 at the lunch interval. Experienced batter Mominul Haque was not out on five as Bangladesh went into the break at 134 for one.
The Tigers will look to capitalize on their strong start and build a substantial first-innings total against Afghanistan.
Bangladesh’s decision to bat first appeared to be paying off, with the opening partnership providing a solid platform for the middle order. Maintaining discipline against Afghanistan’s bowling attack will be crucial as the match progresses.
A Significant Test Challenge for Bangladesh
The one-off Test in Abu Dhabi marks Bangladesh’s first Test match at a neutral venue and their first in the United Arab Emirates.
Led by Najmul Hossain Shanto, Bangladesh entered the contest aiming to continue their positive run in Test cricket. Afghanistan, meanwhile, will be eager to respond after conceding early momentum to the visitors.
With the opening session dominated by Tanzid’s attacking batting and Shadman’s steady support, Bangladesh have given themselves an encouraging platform.
The Tigers will now aim to convert their promising start into a commanding first-innings score as the contest continues at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium.
