Rayan’s Late Header Saves Brazil From Defeat Against Australia

Sports

Townsville, September 25, 2026: Brazil avoided a disappointing defeat against Australia as substitute Rayan scored deep into stoppage time to secure a 1–1 draw in an entertaining international friendly at Queensland Country Bank Stadium.

Brazil appeared set to leave Townsville empty-handed after Australia took the lead through a superb free-kick from Nestory Irankunda. But just when the hosts seemed ready to celebrate a famous victory, Rayan rose inside the box and powered a header into the net in the 95th minute.

The late equaliser came from a well-delivered corner by Raphinha. Australian goalkeeper Patrick Beach managed to get a hand to the header, but the effort had enough power to beat him and cross the line.

The result denied Australia what would have been only their second victory over Brazil.

Australia Start With Confidence

The hosts began brightly and put Brazil under pressure during the opening stages.

Australia controlled much of the early possession and used the width of the pitch effectively. Connor Metcalfe came close within the first few minutes, while Irankunda also tested Brazilian goalkeeper Hugo Souza with a powerful effort.

Brazil gradually settled into the contest and began creating opportunities of their own.

Raphinha threatened with a header that went straight at Beach, while Estevao later forced the Australian goalkeeper into an important save.

Brazil Have a Goal Ruled Out

Brazil thought they had broken the deadlock shortly after halftime when Estevao found the net.

However, the goal was overturned following a VAR review after officials spotted a foul involving Australian captain Harry Soutar earlier in the move.

The decision kept the match level and ensured Australia remained in contention.

Irankunda Puts Australia Ahead

Australia eventually found the breakthrough in the 68th minute.

Irankunda stepped up for a free-kick and produced an outstanding strike, sending the ball over the Brazilian defensive wall and beyond Souza.

The goal gave the hosts a 1–0 advantage and put Brazil under increasing pressure to find an answer.

Australia then dropped deeper and defended their lead as Brazil increased the pressure.

Rayan Delivers at the Death

Brazil continued to push forward as the final whistle approached, and their persistence finally paid off.

A late corner gave the visitors one final opportunity. Raphinha’s delivery found Rayan, who met the ball with a powerful header in the fifth minute of added time.

Beach got a hand to the effort, but could not keep it out.

The equaliser completed a dramatic finish and rescued Brazil from what would have been a surprising loss.

Both teams are looking to rebuild following early exits from the 2026 World Cup, making the friendly an important opportunity to assess players and combinations ahead of future international commitments.

For Australia, the performance offered plenty of encouragement despite the late disappointment. Brazil, meanwhile, will take the result but know they still have areas to improve after being tested for long periods by an energetic Australian side.
