The defending national champion Indiana Hoosiers survived a major challenge from Northwestern on Friday night, holding on for a 29-23 victory in their Big Ten opener in Bloomington.
Indiana entered the matchup ranked No. 5 and had dominated its first three games of the season. The Hoosiers had outscored their previous opponents 145-16 and recorded consecutive shutouts heading into conference play. But Northwestern produced a much tougher test at Memorial Stadium.
The Wildcats stayed within striking distance throughout the game and forced Indiana to fight for the victory until the final minutes.
Indiana Starts Big Ten Play With a Win
Indiana improved to 4-0 with the victory, while Northwestern suffered its first defeat of the season.
The Hoosiers were heavily favored before kickoff after an impressive nonconference start, but Northwestern quickly showed that it would not be overwhelmed.
Indiana’s defense had previously allowed very little production, but the Wildcats found ways to move the ball and keep the game competitive.
The result was a much closer contest than many expected.
Northwestern Gives Indiana a Major Challenge
The Wildcats entered Bloomington unbeaten and had averaged 37.5 points per game through their first two contests.
Quarterback Aidan Chiles was one of the players Indiana had to account for throughout the game. Northwestern’s offense had shown a strong balance between rushing and passing before the matchup, making the Wildcats a difficult opponent to prepare for.
Indiana coach Curt Cignetti had emphasized the importance of stopping Northwestern’s rushing attack and containing Chiles before the game.
That preparation became particularly important once Northwestern began finding opportunities against the Hoosiers.
Hoosiers Make Enough Plays to Stay Ahead
Indiana eventually created enough separation to protect its lead, with Lee Beebe Jr. contributing an important rushing touchdown.
The Hoosiers also benefited from their ability to control key stretches of the game and capitalize when opportunities appeared.
However, the defending champions were unable to turn the game into another runaway victory.
That was a significant change from Indiana’s first three games, when the Hoosiers had produced overwhelming margins against their nonconference opponents.
A Different Test for Indiana’s Defense
Indiana’s defense had entered the game after consecutive shutouts against Howard and Western Kentucky.
Those performances had created considerable attention around the unit, which had established itself as one of the strengths of the defending national champions.
Northwestern, however, represented a substantial step up in competition.
The Wildcats were disciplined offensively and continued to challenge Indiana instead of allowing the Hoosiers to take complete control.
For Indiana, the game provided an early Big Ten test that required more than simply relying on its explosive offense.
Indiana’s Quarterback Situation
Indiana entered the game with Josh Hoover as its starting quarterback.
Hoover had been highly efficient during the opening weeks of the season, throwing for 649 yards and 10 touchdowns without an interception through Indiana’s first three games, according to pregame statistics.
His early-season production had been an important part of Indiana’s fast start.
Against Northwestern, however, the Hoosiers faced a defense that had already shown an ability to create turnovers and limit scoring opportunities.
That made execution particularly important as Indiana attempted to protect its unbeaten record.
Northwestern Leaves Bloomington With Confidence
Although Northwestern did not get the result it wanted, the Wildcats demonstrated that they could compete with one of the country’s top-ranked teams.
The 29-23 scoreline represented a dramatic improvement from the type of blowouts Indiana had produced earlier in the season.
Northwestern’s defense also entered the game allowing only 12.5 points per game, making it one of the more difficult defensive units in the Big Ten through the opening weeks.
The Wildcats ultimately could not complete the upset, but their performance gave the team a strong early conference test.
What the Win Means for Indiana
The victory gives Indiana a 4-0 record and starts its Big Ten schedule with a win.
More importantly, the game exposed areas the Hoosiers will need to address as their schedule becomes more demanding.
Indiana had entered the season with expectations surrounding its status as the defending national champion. Friday night’s game showed that conference opponents are unlikely to simply allow the Hoosiers to dominate.
The Hoosiers now move forward with an unbeaten record, while Northwestern will look to rebound in its next Big Ten matchup.
